Collingwood Thundersnow Classic - CHAMPIONS
What a fun weekend at the Collingwood Thundersnow Classic tournament. The hotel in Thornbury may have been unconventional but it provided a great venue for parents and kids to gather and share a ton of laughs and team bonding time.
We started with a somewhat disappointing 0-0 tie versus Burlington Barracudas, but rallied for a very convincing 7-0 win over the North York Storm on Friday in a lopsided affair.
On Saturday all we needed was a tie against Owen Sound Ice Hawks to lock up first place in our division and we didn't make it easy on ourselves but managed the 1-1 tie with a goal from Emma and some outstanding goaltending from Bella.
Off the semifinals on Saturday night against the Central York Panthers where the girls controlled the play for the most part and came away with a strong 3-1 victory on the back of a ton of strong defensive play and goals by Maggie, Whitney and an empty netter to seal the victory by LLK.
Sunday in the championship game against the home town Collingwood Lightning, our girls showed incredible resilience and team defense. The forwards were hustling at both end of the ice, the defense were bottling up the the puck carrier limiting their chances and Lily Lajoie made some incredible saves when we needed her to. We generated just enough offense with a goal from Whitney, set up by an unbelievable behind the back pass from LLK, to end regulation tied 1-1 and push us to OT. A tight 3 on 3 overtime would solve nothing, so we ended up in a shoot out. Lajoie made 2 great saves on the only Collingwood attempts she would see as Kinsley and Maggie both buried their opportunities to gives us the GOLD in a super excited and very stressful finish!
What a weekend. Certainly some unforgettable moments. We couldn't be more proud of the way the girls played.
